Habitat For Humanity And Prop 123

What Partnership Makes Possible: Affordable Housing In Every Community

Doug Alexandre moved to Vail in 2009 to chase his childhood dream to live and work in the mountains.  He fell in love with Colorado’s high country almost immediately: mountains right outside his door and countless trails to explore.

Working first as a lifty, then a lift mechanic and now a dispatcher, Doug has lived in Vail longer than anywhere else in his life. In that time, he’s seen many friends leave the Vail Valley because they could no longer afford to live there.

A few years ago, Doug wasn’t sure if he’d be able to afford to keep living in Vail. Then, a friend told him about a new homeownership opportunity available through Habitat for Humanity Vail Valley (HFHVV).

With funding from a variety of sources, including Proposition 123, HFHVV was able to purchase 35 condo units in Vail. Doug was one of more than 100 residents who applied. When he found out he’d been chosen, in May 2025, it was almost hard to believe. After years of assuming ownership in Vail simply wasn’t realistic for him, he suddenly had a place to call his own. Months later, the disbelief has settled into something steadier: the relief of finally knowing where he’ll be next year, and the year after that.

In 2022, Gary helped lead the campaign to pass Proposition 123, which dedicates up to $300 million annually to increase the supply of affordable housing across Colorado. In the first four years after Prop 123 passed, more than $600 million has gone toward creating more than 12,000 affordable housing units, including owner-occupied homes like Doug’s condo as well as rental housing.

Today, Gary continues to utilize all of our tools to make housing more affordable and accessible.

With our partners, we’re building on the impact of Prop 123 to help more Coloradans like Doug live in the communities they love. Join us in this next chapter.
