Julie Stone | Director of Family Economic Mobility

Julie Stone is the Director of Family Economic Mobility at Gary, focused on self-sufficiency and wealth-building for Colorado families. The opportunity to join the Gary Team is more than a culmination of her professional experience, it’s her life’s work—there isn’t anything she cares about more than advancing families who deserve a fair shot.

The child of small-business owners in rural Wyoming, Julie’s early career took the form of waitressing, shift manager, cashier, and wholesale fuels purchaser at her family truck stop located on Interstate-80. After the incredible chance to tour with UpWithPeople out of high school, she completed degrees in economics and policy from UW (Wyoming of course), and has since worked in the business, policy, and philanthropy sectors, starting with Wyoming Gov. Dave Freudenthal’s social policy team, followed by human capital consulting, healthcare policy design and labor negotiations for jumbo employers, and finally as a nonprofit executive and fundraiser at Teach For America in Colorado. The journey has Julie obsessed with how we might combine the best of government, philanthropy, and business to create shared ownership and opportunity — for everyone.

Most importantly, Julie is married to the world’s best partner, Jon Stone, and together they have two amazing kids that they really like. The Stones are often found skiing, biking, and camping somewhere in the Colorado mountains.

I would like to see business people try to solve social problems with the same imagination and energy they use to finance a factory or make a deal. Don’t call it philanthropy; call it corporate social investment. Make it integral to business.
